The Bloor Viaduct Bridge used to be a main take off point for those who wanted to learn to fly without wings. That has changed due to the introduction of a suicide barrier.

These days its a well used cycle connection between the east and west side of the DVP and due to slight improvements in the Bicycle lanes it allows neighbourhoods to shake hands more often.

Now it isn't the most beautiful bridge in the city, but it sure is fun to ride across.

I’m searching for the first signs of spring.

Inspired by Copenhagen Cycle Chic, in this past years observations I have been able to document that the bicycle on the streets of Toronto has inspired a culture of awareness of both two wheeled simplicity and street style.

With the upcoming Fashion week and Alternative Fashion weeks in March and April, I’m calling out to all the Toronto Fashion Bloggers, Designers and Cycle Chic manifesto followers to send in their submissions on how two wheels have influenced their Toronto frame of mind.

My bicycle was there during first kisses in Trinity park. It supported early morning rides for spring lattes at the café curbside to the design studio. I've found alleyway shortcuts to where flowers bloom on side streets and the smell of 3am baked bread still lingers past noon.

I recall getting chills watching flowing skirts, and drinking in wafts of perfumed sweat on summer breezes as the red changed to green. I hear the distinct ding of vintage bells whose sweet alarm teased of upcoming conflicts, or flirts of unknown around each turn.

My bicycle crossed the beaches at 2am with bottles of wine to rest amongst the flicker of skyscraper fireflies. Its two wheels have heard the slander of lovers quarrel and felt the side swipe of oncoming traffic during periods of emotional insanity.
My Bicycle took me away through rain wind and snow, always without a care to the destination.

It has inspired films, music, poems and photos. Its simple stencil holds strength in its slender spokes. It creates a relationship that binds the stiletto to the pedal. It fuels a fire that pushes one leg to mimic the other in a rhythmic dance that brings reason to the here and there.

If you own a bicycle and are a Toronto Fashion Designer, Fashion Photographer, Blogger, Musician or any Torontonian whose style has been inspired by the simplicity and sexiness of two wheels please join this virtual ride to somewhere.

The gift wrapped puppy is the only clue in this photo that it is -7 degrees celcius outside, and it feels like -18 with the windchill.

The,"Bay" aka, "the Hudsons Bay Company" brings back countless memories of many winters. I recall the hopes and dreams of a young boy wishing for presents while I stopped and stared at the Christmas displays in their windows after skating at city hall.

Cruising by at 8am, Christmas shopping seems to be the last thing on her mind.

As the autumn sun sets and available daylight gets shorter with each passing day, the emergence of wonderful layers start to appear, leggings, and denim skirts with plaid flannel shirts under leather fringed jackets help to keep out the chill. It was 10 years ago when I stepped out as a starving design graduate and into the pre-online world of Canadian fashion. Caught between a craving for creativity and a quest to fulfill a dream of a family, I sold illustrations for drugs and sold the drugs to purchase a questionable second hand Gardin Singlespeed bike which was two sizes two small and eventually stolen from my Brothers Loft Patio above the now Unit Bar at Queen and Gladstone.

My 5 am commute took me from my 10x10 cube at weston road and the 401 , to the land of Misura by Joeffer Caoc at then the foot of 174 Spadina. It was the first step to the incubator, but I ended up being an ox in the land of Butterflies, a literal human rolling/walking rack. I spent my first year there surrounded by 5th floor views of Toronto, Lettieri Lattes, the Faulhaber laugh and exposed brick. I enjoyed the backstage rush of makeup and models, the likes of a still budding Daria Werbowy. But even though I was overworked and underpaid, it was my night time rides home through the streets of my city that kept me grounded and aware that this city lives and breathes bicycles.

To photograph an urban cyclist is to capture a question, I always wonder who they are and why they ride, could they be someones dentist or lawyer?, or radio host like Tarek Fatah and John Moore on CFRB?, could they be an actor or actress like Rachel McAdams, or the stylist and makeup artist that creates their image?, or is that guy in the apron the cook who will be making my lunch?

Torontonians, and visitors all have a small role in this city and we contribute in our own way regardless of whether or not we ride a bicycle or even pay taxes. I'm far from a Bicycle advocate and more of an admirer, but why are its citizens such as, Doctors, Lawyers, Salespeople, cooks, cleaners, designers, distributors, actors and actresses, Mothers, Fathers and Families, and even the homeless etc... having to ask for a saftey net when they choose to pick up a bicycle and go? if Torontonians want to swim we build pools... but sadly many Toronto pools are closing.

An adventure from the fashion industry to the family industry paired with a Rome to Paris trip has landed me a scheduled routine between west Bloor west and my morning playground of High Park and Roncesvalles. I've been condensed, and since the honeymoon stage my anticipated release now is my humpday bike rides tracing the Toronto shoreline to cherry street for volleyball, and then reversing back through familliar streets of which I used to own at 4 a.m.

10 years has managed to take me outside of the centre of Hogtown , but even with the absence of bike lanes I still ride these streets at night, the lingering echo of brass bicycle bells calling out to remind me, that at the core of Toronto there are Bicycles.

the 7a.m morning ride across queen was peaceful, and not a Backhoe or contstruction worker to be seen. the open road was one big bike lane with street car tracks running through it.

i was too early for the Toronto Bike Union group ride, and rode solo, although we all ended up at City Hall in time for coffee, pancakes, bikes and t-shirts.

I have an extra medium if anyone from another city wants to trade.

Commuters from around the city meet to ride together from four start points and converge at Yonge and Bloor for 7:30 a.m. These rides are staffedwith ride co-ordinators, Emergency Medical Services workers, and a Police escort. All riders will receive a free Bike Month t-shirt for their participation, as well as complimentary breakfast upon their arrival at City Hall.

The ride from Leslieville extended to Queen west, and as the temperature rose to almost 16 degrees a warm breeze blew in the first hints of the 5th season in toronto...Construction.

As the Backhoes and Pavers hit our streets, bike lanes often migrate from the road to the sidewalk, and sometimes dissapear... This Urbanite gracefully mounted the sidewalk while keeping pace with me as I snapped shots dodging the street car tracks and potholes... She beat me to the next green light.

From the pages of Another Story, " me and my Bike" took a left turn and wandered down the side streets of, "Ronce" and on the corner of Sorauren and Wright, the spring buds on"Balluchon" appeared...

Caught in the nostalgia of fresly roasting fair trade coffee and a bread pudding made from croissants I was informed the bike racks and patio were coming soon.

Well worth the detour on a mid day ride. A true hidden gem.

As I relaxed on the downhill slope towards High Park, an open door of an Audi A6 in my path, reminded me of the benefits and differences of having Car and Life Insurance.

I could have been a human door ornament.

Without protection of walls, doors and windows, the commuting cyclist is a fragile yet powerful entity in a bubble.
It's 5:30, I wipe the sweat of freedom off my forhead, lock up "Sunny" ( more on her later), place my key in the door, trying hard to not to burst my bubble.

I am greeted by a 3 year old who's joyful that his avocado seed has started to sprout.
These first roots become a temporary firewall which will shield him from the the truth of all that is twisted on the 6 o'clock news. My hope for his future is growing.

Otesha, which means "reason to dream" in Swahili is a connection that pedestrians, motorists and cyclists share, but sharing does not always make us aware of each other.

The, "Otesha Project" brings together my shared joy of cycling and with an adventure of Hope, Peace and Grease. Their unique grass roots initiative, merges multimedia, theatre and storytelling. Then via two wheels they embark on a journey of improv, environment, awareness, sustainability and choice

So the sickness has passed... unfortunately my little man, "Mr Crazy Pants" Dia, has caught it.

He's been sleeping for almost 24 hours only waking to take sips of liquid, small bites of a green apple and make weak calls out for mommy to go pee.

As the sun shone through the window I promised him spring would soon be here... A year goes by so fast. This pic was taken last spring, before the tulips woke up.

Hello I am looking to trade a 2003 GT Ruckus 1.0, w/ Rock SHOX psylo C front suspension fork. 100mm adjustable travel,Shimano Disc brakes, Syncho big box rims which have upgraded Tires to new 26" maxxis hookworms which are perfect for any type of urban assault. Medium size suitable for riders 5"6 to 5"11 and 180 lbs. slight rusting on some of the bolts but only cosmetic. (See link for complete description.)

The bike has been ridden about 5 times since I got it and due to knee injury i'm no longer keen on jumping. Retailed for over $1000 but will let it go for $400 or trade for a more daddy friendly 70's Raleigh Superbe with stand over height of at least 32" for someone 6" tall in great condition (should include headlamp, mudguards, brooks saddle (leather if possible), and pump if available) tuned up and ready to ride would be a plus. ( see pics )

(will also consider any other vintage Bianchi or Raleigh road bikes in similar great condition from the 70's... reynolds 531 preferred and 32" stand over)

Bike Chic Flic," Monkey Warfare"

It's the need to start or suppress a revolution while taking the time to soul search, drink coffee, start fires and smoke weed.

Monkey Warfare takes you on a psychedelic trip down Toronto streets and neighbourhoods and brings to light some elements of the bike culture that may or may not be considered chic. However it was Nadia Litz riding one handed flipping the bird that got me to watch.
Her sense of freedom is gained while riding without reason, although beneath her vintage knit beret she is unconsciously searching for a cause.

It showcases scenes that allow a juxtaposition of trend setting bike thieves with reasonable doubt, and pairs for dessert what can happen when passion is bound to an idea which is left to run wild.

If you have ever wondered where the neglected bikes go, or asked youself, " would I choose arson?", this may be a film for you.

This three sided trip directed by,"Reg Harkema," was a fave at the TIFF, and is currently live on HBO.

Toronto to Copenhagen Cycle Chic (step 1.)

Matteo had just thrown himself out the window, and before inserting the second DVD into the Samsung Sound bar I took the time to brew some Cherry Bomb Shogun Espressos with Condensed milk. Uncle Green Bean had given us a Bialetti old school style Italian espresso maker, and similar to the Legnano we are putting it to good use.

"La Meglio Gioventù", is a 6 hour Italian film directed by Marco Tullio Giordana, which chronicles the relationship between two brothers through the 1960’s and into the early 2000’s.

Their saga commences with the brothers planning a pilgrimage from Rome to the northern capes of Norway. A wonderful tale of adventure and passion, and if you think you can stay seated for 6 hours with subtitles, (which is like a nice ride with an Italian exchange student from Toronto to Niagara Falls,) I’d recommend it as a full week rental from blockbuster.

Although this adventure did not quite intertwine with the cycling culture that we have immersed ourselves with, I now find myself longing for a pilgrimage adventure of my own.

With Google Earth and Trip Advisor as my guides I traced the Best of Youth path from Rome to Norway, and two inches from Oslo a sudden speed bump of curiosity caught my eye… København! Why not plan a pilgrimage to one of the cornerstones of Cycle Chic?. I should compile a plan to trek from Toronto to Copenhagen.

The search engine on Expedia.ca can guide us to stay within or under the $5000 budget for this voyage. At first glance the travel budget which should include Hotel and Flight for 2 weeks, 2 adults and one 3 year old, slots us into either the very American Marriot Copenhagen or the Phoenix København. however I know with the aid of my Folie a Deux roommate, there are better deals, as well as day trip itineraries to be found.

I’ve sourced out a local bike rental shops,”København Cyklers” and the CCC recommended "Baisikeli." For 520 Danish Krones or less, (which translates into approximately $120 CAD;) you can rent a city bike complete with child limo or trailer.

Packing light will be essential as our time will be spent with the family riding the, "green wave," dodging tourist traps in Nyhavn or retracing steps in Strøget to find a great deal on new boots.

It seems like I may have to sell the Superbe or start saving up, as I may spend more on shopping than on the flight...

New Year's Cycleliterate Chic Challenge

It's a happy New Year, and as the family forum sat around discussing the New Year’s fitness resolutions with egg soufflés and cinnamon crunch bagels at Panera Bread, an overlooked fact came to light.

Approximately 50% of the people I know do not know how to ride a bicycle, or haven't ridden a bicycle in over a year.

For bicycle culture to flourish in any city, it can not happen if the inhabitants are not versed in the language of the two wheeled adventure.

In 2009 i need to ensure that 100% of my friends and family are, “cycle literate.”

My challenge to all is to engage or attempt to teach all your, “cycle illiterate” friends how to ride.

It’s not very chic to ride without your friends due to the fact that they don’t know how to ride.

I have a garage full of Bicycles, and only half of my friends can ride with me on Saturday mornings to St Lawrence Market.

If you can’t find adult sized training wheels for your friends, Toronto has CAN-BIKE courses all over the city where you can learn how to ride.

Other wise, buy me a bottle of wine and we can hangout.

New Years Restoration Chic

So Christmas has come and gone, and other than the new garage door that needs replacement I didn't get what was on my wish list. However Henri my cycle godfather from Amsterdam cleaned out his garage to be a snowbird in Florida, and gave me a Legnano Gran Premio 21" frame for Christmas advising me that it would need love…I got Love.

The "21 inch frame has no rear wheel and a bent rear dropout on the derailleur side, however while sipping my Kamikaze Americano at Cherry Bomb with Uncle Green Bean, I looked up to see a beautiful cherry red Legnano on the wall. Coincidentally it was the same red Legnano from the Velocolour website.

Apparently the "cherry red" at, "cherry bomb" belongs to a wonderful local artisan Suzanne Carlsen who creates very chic custom headbadges for bicycles… the perfect new years makeover gift for anyone’s bicycle."

I’m trying to think up a mix between old and new for my Legnano, I’m going to ask Noah at Velocolour to strip it down and paint it Legnano green, and instead of a Legnano decal on the downtube I’d love to have a Legnano Logo made of brass. Similar to a Brass headbadge but a," Downtubebadge
I wonder if this can be done…

until I hit Queen St. West and tried to find a spot beside Raq and Waq to lock up the superbe... I guess the overnight parking got full.

...Personality, its the struggle between vanity and purpose. its the $150 dollars I saved by not buying a new Brooks B66s Saddle, only to blow my savings on a few pomegranate martini's.

I'm stuck in a materialistic vintage realm, of reynolds 531 and whitewalls. I dream in chrome and leather, and listen intently for the screech of slush covered brakes, and the shudder of street car tracks.

But is this the me I wanted to be?, the voyuer,backyard peeking, alley girl cruiser who found safety in being alone on queen street at 3 a.m?

I'm considering riding crap just to preserve Medori Green by hanging her from the ceiling.

Is it a mixture of vanity and purpose in the way we choose to look when we ride?

or is it really stupid to ride naked?

Is $100+ too much to pay for a Saddle?

(Update, ... I thought $150 was just too much, so luckily I just got a slightly used Antique Brooks B66s off ebay for $50.64 ...free shipping! it turns out a lady bought a Pashley, and found the seat TOO HARD!, so she bought a $40 gel saddle and gave this one to her son, who sold it to me on Ebay.... I also got Kael a pair of DIESEL KOFFHA jeans for $76)

Maybe now i'll sell the new looking old vinyl brooks saddle for $50.
